What I Teach and Why
If you’ve never heard of Life Coaching, or you’ve heard of it but still couldn’t answer a question about it if you found yourself on Cash Cab, today is your lucky day. By the way if you do end up on Cash Cab give a shout out to my husband… he’ll be watching. I am so loving all the questions I’m getting about Bold New Mom and I decided I’d put some of the answers out to y’all. You know…in case you wondered or didn’t even think to ask. Consider this part 1 of what I anticipate will be a 3 part series but being not a planner, somewhat impulsive and a woman, I reserve the right to change my mind.
What is a Life Coach anyway?
This is a great question because the truth is, Life Coaching is not a regulated industry. This means anyone can call themselves a Life Coach and you might not have any idea what they do in the end.
Most commonly though, Life Coaches work with individuals who want to go from good to great in some aspect of their lives. In comparison, a Therapist is working with people who are somewhat non-functioning in certain areas of their lives. As a side note I have huge love for Therapists and you can learn more about the difference between the two right here, but for now let me sum it up by using a metaphor. If you wanted to learn to play golf and you really had no idea how to play, you might take a class or lesson to learn the basics (therapy). Once you got pretty good, if you really wanted to pursue golf seriously you might hire a coach to work with you more closely one on one and help you really take things to the next level (life coaching). Side note number 2: I secretly hope one of my sons will become a professional golfer so I don’t have to worry about planning for retirement. I’ll just have to be reeeeally nice to him. Forever. Sounds a lot easier than planning for retirement.
With Bold New Mom, I’m working with women who have kids and they are doing just fine. They’re probably women who are just like you, your close friends or family. Ordinary women who are just going through life being human and doing the best they can. They come to me because they recognize that they need to secure their own oxygen masks so that they’ll be able to really help their kids or anyone else they may want to help. Many of my clients have young children still at home but some have grown children who have moved out and started families of their own. As their coach, I help them see themselves and their lives differently than they ever have before. At times this is overwhelming and scary but once they see the power in letting go of resistance and what has always felt like truth but is really just created in the mind, they are able to see the tremendous empowerment that comes from being in complete control of everything they are experiencing.
How does it work?
I do all my coaching over the phone. Most of my clients don’t live close enough to meet up in person but even the ones that do find it more convenient and just as effective to do the sessions on the phone. I used to think I hated talking on the phone but I spend a lot of time on the phone now (you’re welcome AT&T) and I feel energized by these women every time I finish a call. As they have amazing breakthroughs and open themselves up in order to evolve, there is an energy that I can feel even through the phone and it’s just the best feeling ever.
I have a 6-week program called Be Bold where everyone starts out learning the tools that are critical if you want to feel better, be more effective, and/or start rocking out your Titanic sized life goals. Without the sinking I mean. There’s no iceberg ahead or if there is you’re going to have a pickaxe ready to go. I think I just wrote pickaxe because my 8-year-old plays a lot of Minecraft. I’m not sure I even know what a pickaxe is but if I stumble upon an iceberg I’m pretty sure I’ll want one. Anyway, the 6-week program, consisting of one-session per week will change a person. Permanently. I like to warn people that once they know these tools they can’t un-know them and it will truly change the way you view your life, your relationships and your day-to-day activities. I even had someone say their experience reading their scriptures is completely different and more alive now that they know what they know.
What made you choose to do this and what did you have to do in order to get started?
I consider myself so lucky to have met a woman named Kris Plachy, Owner at Leadership Coach, Inc when I worked full time at a large corporation. She brought the same tools I use as a coach now, into our company and taught me to coach leaders using them. It was amazing and powerful work. What I didn’t expect was that these tools that made me effective at my job, would also help me so tremendously in my own life. They helped me be a better wife and mother. They helped me live my religion more fully. They helped me get clarity about what is important and then make things happen. They helped me feel more joy and love and happiness in my life even when it looked nothing like the picture I though it should look like. When my journey in Corporate America ended, I knew I had to find a way to go through the program at the Life Coach School to become a certified coach using the same tools. My sweet husband agreed we should spend the large sum and I jumped in … all in… not sure what I would do with the tools once I finished.
Needless to say, since passing my certification at the school I have felt on fire about sharing these tools with others. I chose to focus my business on moms because I know that most moms are often functioning in a state of grin and bear it and just get through another day. I used to be that way myself and I know many other women who are in that world. That’s no way to live and it’s not creating the kind of environment our kids are going to need if they’re going to be emotionally strong adults growing up in today’s world. I’m fumbling along learning all about how to build a business and continuing to make sure I rock out my coaching skills and some mornings I get a glimpse of how everything else in my life has been to prepare me for this path. I have no idea where this will take me or how long I’ll do this work, but I do know it’s exactly what I’m supposed to do right now. I mean exactly. That feels just more amazing than I can describe. I hope for each of you to find that feeling in your life and if you need help discovering it, I know a good coach. Just sayin’.
Next time in the series, What I Teach and Why, I’ll talk about who is a good candidate for these programs and who is not. Stay tuned and keep the questions coming!
Love your guts…
